Washington Middle School
An addition/renovation to Washington Middle School in Missoula, MT, the existing building was originally constructed in 1951 and 1954 with a major addition added in 1989. Student safety and security was a major concern as the 1954 building was not connected, forcing students and teachers to walk outside to get to their classrooms. The K-8 school serves over 700 students. The designers utilized the added program elements to “connect” the existing buildings, creating a secure interior circulation loop. A new gymnasium, library, multi-purpose room/cafetorium, and corridor connect renovated music classrooms, science classrooms, and other updates to existing rooms.
